start to spring fishing, but I expect things to heat up very soon.Water temp
is around 45 degrees. Getting shakers mostly and some nice Bull Trout. I
expect things to change within the week. Having some real nice warm days to
fire things up.

Brownies flies that are working are 215,221,214,228, and 219. Typical spring
colors. For Lymans, green’s and pinks mostly. Top 30 feet. Getting a few at
around 77, but not many. I’ll send out a report soon to let you know when
the big trout have turned on.

I have a few salmon / halibut trips in August left. Prime time. Looking like
a great summer is on its way. They are already getting some fish in Ucluelet
now. Feeder springs and some salmon from the early Columbia River run. What
an awesome time out on the west coast !! I can hardly wait to get out there

Got back from holidays around February 20. Before we left we had some great
days. I was looking forward to getting back out on the water when I got
home. However it was tough fishing. I guess the moody days of march arrived
a bit early this year. I’ll be laying low for another week or so getting
caught up on some other work and going to a couple of trade shows. Prime
time spring fishing will be starting mid April, so looking forward to that.
If your wanting to shake the winter cobwebs off, the time is now to book for
spring fishing. Also doing well on the salmon / halibut bookings for July
and August in Ucluelet, however I still havent heard from some of you yet!!
All forecasts are looking to another great summer of fishing.
The halibut rules have changed again. Only one halibut over 83 cm , which
is the same as last year, but none over 60 lbs. I guess they will give us a
length measurement to go by. Two possession is the same as before. If the
halibut stocks are decreasing, I guess the best way to replenish them is to
throw back the big females. As long as the commercial guys have the same
rule.

Please remember to like Kootenay Kingfisher on Facebook if you are on it. I
am posting more up to date reports on there.

I look forward to hearing from you soon. Take care and …
time of year but when we get em they are big. Seems to be two or three days
per week when the rainbows are turned on. Fortunately the Bull Trout are
kicking into high gear to fill in the blanks. January to March are my
favorite Bull Trout months. Pull in some real nice fatties.

Hard to keep up to where they are. One day on top and the next day down
deep, but with a bit of work we can find out what they want, and where they
are hiding.

As far as gear is concerned, I’m using a bit of everything. Lyman’s, flies,
and billies. Just going by water conditions etc. Let them tell you what they
want that day.Speed most days is 2 – 2.5mph

Already 50% booked for 2013 salmon/halibut season, so please drop me a line
so we can get you in the calendar. Looking to be a banner year by all
forcasts.I am booking for July and August.

If you haven’t signed up on our facebook page yet, please do so, as I’m
going to do more updates and photo’s on there. Should be a little easier,
and I can send out reports from the boat.I can also post more pictures. The
email list is getting long, and its hard to send out a lot of pictures on a
group email.

The weather has been awesome.Been above freezing a lot of days in January.
Beautiful to be out on the water, and if you get a bit chilly, the Espar
furnace warms you up in the cab. Lots of great fishing days left this
winter. Hope to hear from you soon!!

The last week to 10 days has been tough fishing. Low numbers and working
hard to get our big one for the day. Not typical of this time of year.
Hopefully it changes soon !! Have tried most everything, and nothing makes a
big difference. Just have to wait patiently for the short bite time, and
your chance at a big one. Even the bull trout went moody for awhile here.
Seems to be lots of fish stacked up at 100 – 150 ft, but they seem to be in
hybernation mode. Water temp is good at 43 degrees. Patience seems to be the
order of the day, but I don’t have any in November December as the fishing
should be hot for the most part.

Having said all that we are getting some beautiful rainbows. Having an
opportunity at a big one most days. Ralph got a big male that was 35 inches
long. Most fish at this length should be well over 23 lbs, but this one was
17lbs. Big head and long, but very thin in the belly. Gorgeous fish none the
less. Like I said they seem to be in hybernation mode and not feeding. Most
of the fish we have kept have nothing in their stomachs. One 13 lber we kept
had lots of fat inside it, but its stomach was shrunk tight. Not sure if it
could have fit a kokanee in it. Shows that they are not feeding heavily.

I’ve been using everything. The 215 has been the most consistant, but I have
also hooked big fish on Lyman plugs and Billies. Most fish have been caught
below 3 mph. 2.2- 2.8 mph seems to be best.

The good news is that they should be off their diet soon, and start feeding
hard. Some little change in water temp or weather will turn them on. We’ll
be out there when it happens!!

Getting some real nice fish the last week. Yesterday landed a 18.25lb buck
on a 215 bucktail. The day before our biggest was 18lbs down at 123 ft. So
they are yo yo ing still but one way or another we’ll find them.
Also getting some real nice bull trout down deep. Some days we had 6- 12
bull trout. Lots of small ones, but one or two big fatties. Then the deep
line starts peeling off line and you know you got a big trout on.
Two days ago we had real steady action till 1:00 pm with the 18 being the
biggest. At 1:00 pm the light switch turned off and we never got another
bite. The next morning out we go and in ten minutes we have a small Bull
Trout on which we lost. Another ten minutes pass and we land a 9 lb rainbow
from 123 ft down. Well this is going to be another great morning!!! After 6
hours with no bites my attitude has changed dramatically. I put out the 215
- ole faithfull. We get a small trout on it so back out it goes. Fifteen
minutes later the rod goes back but does not start to peel line so I think
we may have another shaker, but I see the fish swirling on top and it has a
huge tail so I know its not a shaker. So I reel down hard on it and set the
hook twice for good measure, and that wakes him up!! Off he runs and the
game is on. 15 minutes later Kim lands a 18.25 lb buck. Beautiful fish. He
decides to take pictures and let him go back. Thanks Kim!!
Don’t forget about the Kaslo derby this weekend. Going to be a big event!
Hope to get out fishing with you real soon. Have openings end of November
and December. Drop me a line!

Kootenay Lake is firing up!!! Still a bit warm, but getting some real nice

Pulled out three between 10 and 17 lbs a couple of days ago,on the 221 and
204. Most days getting fish over 10 lbs. The calm days have been tough but
with some patience getting rainbows on Lyman Plugs at 21 – 55 ft. Had a
couple of killer Bull Trout days down around 123ft with Lymans and spoons.
It’s funny though, one day we did 12 bullies, the next we did 3, and the
last couple of days none.

Most of the fish – rainbows and Bullies are super healthy looking which is
nice to see. Real footballs! Lots of feed for them.

The Woodbury Derby was a big success. 21 lbs took first place. The Kaslo
derby is on Nov.9,10,11. Big prize money will be offered. Last year first
prize was almost $4000.00.You can phone Barren’s Tackle at 250-353-2617 or
Kaslo Hotel at 250-353-7714 for more info.

Made it back home to the Kootenay’s beginning of September. Had a great
season client wise, but the salmon were a bit smaller than we are used to in
August. Big guys were spotty. Seems the big runs of migratory fish went
around us and stayed out about 40 miles offshore. They stayed in a cold
current out there in the blue water. That hasn’t happened in a long time,
and probably won’t happen again for along time.

So we picked away at big Port Alberni fish close to home, and on the nice
days we ran out to big bank and loaded up on smaller Springs and lots of
Coho.

The good news is that it was the best Halibut fishing in 15 years. This year
I started anchoring up and chuming them in and we loved it. Some times you
would anchor right on top of them, and within 20 minutes you were done, and
sometimes we had to wait for an hour or hour and a half for the chum to call
them in. A bit of patience usually called in one or two real nice fish in
the 30 – 50 lb range and sometimes larger ones over 60lbs. The Hali fishing
helped boost up our pounds of meat at the end of the day.

Really looking forward to next year. Hope you can join me for this
incredible west coast experience.

Back in the Kootenay’s I have almost finished checking out my couch and TV
at home, and making sure they are working properly.

The Ole 23ft.Hourston worked flawlessly this summer, and I’m going to spend
a couple of weeks of TLC on her before I put her in the water at Kaslo. I’ll
start fishing Kootenay Lake around the beginning of October. The Woodbury
Rainbow Derby starts on the 6th so will be getting ready for that. The other
fall derby is in Kaslo on Nov.10,11,12. It’s sponsored by Barren’s Tackle
Store, and the Kaslo Hotel. Record high prize money will be offered at that
derby again this year. Should be a bunch of fun. The fall season is booking
up fast, so please email or phone me with your prefered dates soon. It’s
going to be a great year on Kootenay lake. Fish counts were at a record high
this year. Looking forward to further using Brownies Skull Pattern flies as
well. Started using them last year and they worked very well. A little
easier to tune, and they look incredible in the water. Big fish love them!!!

Look forward to talking to you soon, and the next report will be full of big
Gerrard Trout pictures.

Hello from Ucluelet. Moved out to Ukee and started fishing the west coast
around July 1. Great numbers of both salmon and halibut. Sorting through the
small ones and keeping springs in the 15 – 25 lb range. A few fish over 30
lbs have been showing up, and their numbers will increase over the next
couple of weeks.
Lots of halibut this year as well. Seems like they are a bit bigger this
year. I started anchoring up for them on the nicer days, and it is working
very well.
I have a couple of open dates in primetime August, so if your looking for an
incredible west coast experience, and some fish for the freezer, please drop
me a line.
See you soon.

10 lbs. All chromers coming in as the spawners are up at Gerrard now. Will
an idea on the counts.

Last week we were getting nice fish most days. Fish in the 12 – 15lb range.
On wednesday we never landed one over 10lbs. Then on Thursday everything
came together and we had a busy day. We landed 5 rainbows in the 11 – 17lb
range. Gorgeous chromers. Great fight. Also threw in an 8lb dolly and 4
shakers. The 219, 221, and 215 were hot that day. Typical spring colors.
Flies with green in them are working well as the water turns green from the
runoff.

Still have a few salmon/halibut dates left. Will be out on the west coast
fishing by the beginning of July.

Weather have finally turned nice. Looks like we may get a summer after all.
Hope you can join me soon.
