Fishing report for November 11, 2006:
Kootenay Lake
fishing very well. Excellent numbers of Gerrard's 10 - 18
lbs, and of course lots of smaller ones mixed in. I've heard
of a few 24 pounders being caught on the radio.
Lots of rain the last week, and when it's pouring, the bite definitely
slows, but it just has to back off a little, and they start again.
Almost all fish are coming on hair at 3.0 to 3.5 mph. Dollies
are hitting plugs on the downrigger.
Last week I had the privilege of fishing with Bob Brown. He
ties about 20 000 bucktails a year for Kootenay Lake, and has
extensive knowledge on color patterns, and anything else you want
to know about ripping hair for big Gerrards.
I pick him up at shore in front of his place, and we start fishing
right there. He says Brad I've got this new pattern that
I want to try. I get the boat up to speed etc. and he puts
out this fly straight behind the boat. Then he starts to
rig up the other side.
He gets out the second rod, and the first rod starts to scream
out line. I lunge for the rod, set the hook, and pass it
back to Bob. After an awesome fight he lands a 17lber. Neither
of us have a camera, so we weigh it and release him. I turn
to Bob, pause, and say .... " What took you so long?".
I get the boat back up and going in the direction we want to go,
and he puts out the first line again. He starts putting
out the second line, and the first starts to scream line off again.
I start laughing and offer the rod to him, but he refuses
so I bring in a 7lb Gerrard. After we relase that fish I
turn to him and say... " I'll take a dozen of those flies
right now."
We fish a few more hours, and get some smaller fish. The
next morning I take clients to the same spot, put out the same
fly, and within 10 minutes we're fighting a 13 lb rainbow.
Bob has put together 6 packs of his top 6 flies on Kootenay Lake
for me. I f your interested drop me a line and we can ship
them out to you. They will catch you fish!!!
Tight Lines ... Brad

P.S. Sorry about no pictures. My camera broke three weeks
ago, and the new one still hasn't come in. I'll get on it.
