FISHING REPORT

Fishing report for April 2, 2007:

With all the great Bull Trout fishing we've been having the last couple of months, Horace decided to come up and try for some IGFA line class records.

We would be trying for the 4lb line record which meant we would have to beat a 9lbs,4oz Bull.

Horace's good friend Don was up as well, so we ran his line with a flasher and hootchie to find where the fish were, and we ran one of Horace's lines on the downrigger, and one on top.

Day one ended with the flasher and hootchie getting most of the fish. I obviously couldn't run a standard flasher on 4lb test, but the plugs and spoons that we did run didn't seem to be getting bites.

Day two started out slow, but by around noon, the flasher and hootchie started to get fish. Then Don hooks into a big one at 91ft. After a great battle he lands a 13lb Bull. We take pictures, and he releases it. That was the 2nd or 3rd fish at 91ft that day, but when we put Horace's line down there they were not interested. So we did some brainstorming, and I remembered that I had a small Abe & Al flasher that might be low enough drag to pull with 4lb test. That would allow us to use hootchies which is obviously what the fish wanted.

So I rig up a set, and we send it down to 91ft. 20 minutes later the rigger releases, and line is peeling off Horace's Shimano Calcutta reel. Horace plays the fish like a pro, and eventually works the big fish up from the depths with his custom built 11ft. rod. A few tense moments at the boat, but we net the 11.5lb Bull Trout. A new record!!! Back to the dock we go for official weighing and documenting.
